How Big Is Your God?
I marvel at some of the analogies people use to describe God. Among my favorites are: God is like a tree (trunk, branches, and leaves), God is like an egg (shell, yolk, and white), and my newest favorite—God is like Neapolitan ice cream (three flavors, yet one ice cream).
I appreciate these attempts to define, express, explain, and describe God. They all arise from the same desire—to understand our Creator. Deep within every human heart is a longing to know the One who made us. Yet, despite our best efforts, every analogy falls far short of capturing who God truly is.
Psalm 113:5-6 asks:
“Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth?”
Consider the magnitude of that statement. God is so great, so exalted, that He humbles Himself merely to look upon the heavens and the earth. How great must our God be!
When we reduce God to the limits of our understanding, we also limit our ability to behold His greatness. The finite mind struggles to comprehend the Infinite One.
Everything Scripture reveals about God is true and sufficient for us to know Him. Yet Scripture never suggests that it contains everything there is to know about Him. God is simply too vast, too glorious, and too immeasurable to be fully comprehended by human minds.
The apostle Paul reminds us:
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face...” (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Until that day, I will trust Him with my life. I will love Him with all my heart. I will serve Him with all my strength. And on that great and glorious day, I will finally see Him face to face.
What a day that will be.
