Rooted in Christ

When I moved to Connecticut, I wasn’t prepared for the sheer presence of rock. The landscape is filled with igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary stone. It is layer upon layer of solid earth shaped over time. You don’t have to travel far to see stone rising on either side of the road, like natural monuments reminding us of the strength and endurance built into creation.

But amid all this rugged terrain, I noticed something surprising. Certain plants—especially those with fibrous roots—don’t just survive in this stony ground. They thrive. Their roots stretch down, winding through cracks and crevices, slowly breaking apart the very rocks that surround them. They’re made for this. It’s as if their design anticipates resistance—and overcomes it.

Isn’t that a picture of how we’re called to grow in Christ?

The Apostle Paul writes:

Let your roots grow down into Him, and draw up nourishment from Him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all He has done.”
—Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

God never promised us easy soil. Life is rocky. We face obstacles, hardship, and pressure. But like those fibrous-rooted plants, we are designed to grow here. Not apart from difficulty, but through it. The deeper we press into Christ the stronger we become. Our roots find nourishment in Him, and over time, even the toughest opposition begins to crack and give way.

Are you facing resistance today? Hard circumstances? Stony paths?

Don’t pull away. Dig deeper.

Let your roots sink into the love, truth, and presence of Jesus. Let your soul draw strength from His Word. Keep growing. Keep pressing in. Because those who are rooted in Him will not only stand firm—they’ll flourish.

With Gratitude, Pastor Jesse
